Filipinos consider pets as part of the family. During the ECQ, when businesses including veterinaries and pet supplies started to stop its operations, I’ve seen a lot of fur parents worrying about pet supplies and gasping for home remedies, especially for pets who need special care.
I found myself stressed in the same situation and I am thankful that most of us made through it and I was able to provide for my pug, Chichi. Yet, this reminded me of the animals in the zoo, in the shelter, and on the streets. I wonder how they made it during the pandemic.
At that moment I started following animal welfare groups and shelters. I’ve seen a lot of volunteers who did their best to ensure that these animals are taken care of. Others preferred to extend their help thru sponsorship and donation.
If you believe that animals need help as much as humans do, I encourage you to support and donate to the following animal welfare groups and shelters:
The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS)
The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is a registered non-profit, volunteer-based organization dedicated to the protection and the promotion of humane treatment of all animals.
What they do:
- Educate and disseminate information concerning animal welfare, animal care, animal control, and other animal-related concerns.
- Run an animal shelter called PARC (PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center), currently houses over 300 cats and dogs rescued from cruelty or neglect, where animals are rehabilitated in the hope of finding them new homes and a second chance at a good life.
- Offer a low-cost clinic that provides veterinary services to the indigent community, including spay and neuter (kapon).
- Accepts volunteers

Animal Rescue PH is an independent solo indigent animal rescuer.

What they do:
Homing more or less 100 cats and dogs. Unfortunately, they don’t have the means of establishing an animal shelter for the rescued cats and dogs. Instead, they live with them and provide their needs through donations from their followers on social media. They also welcome those who intend to adopt and rehome their rescued cats and dogs.

CARA (Compassion and Responsibility for Animals) Welfare Philippines was formed in the year 2000 by a dedicated group of animal lovers and volunteers determined to help the plight of animals in the Philippines. It is a non-profit, non-government organization that receives no government funding and solely on private donations.

- Promote Trap/Neuter/Return in barangays, villages and commercial establishments
- Provide caring and responsible homes through our adoption program

- Promote no-kill pounds and shelters
- Does not run an animal shelter, but exceptional cases are housed at the clinic awaiting adoption.

Philippine Animal Rescue Team (PART)
To date, PART is the only no-kill SEC-registered animal rescue organisation in the country. The sanctuary in Quezon is home to a wide variety of over 500 animals. As a non-profit, the organisation is currently struggling, with volunteers being forced to stay home due to quarantine.

I am not a pet lover mula nung makagat ako ng aso ng kapitbahay namin when I was in Grade 3. But I do respect animals. Hindi ako favor sa mga zoo, animal museums, etc. Animals should be in their natural habitats. Pets, usually cats or dogs, should be loved as they have feelings as well.
